Web Development: The Basics to Advanced


As web development gains popularity, more and more people are interested in learning how to develop websites. This is a good idea for some because they want to create their website; for others, it's a path to employment opportunities. In either case, this blog post will give you the basic knowledge on web development that you need to know about. 

First, you'll learn some basic concepts on what makes up a website and the different components. You'll also learn about website design trends and some short-term and long-term goals before getting into more advanced topics like HTML5 coding and CSS3 styling.

While in graduate school, it was very useful for me to develop knowledge of web development. I chose web development as my major because I found myself interested in web development, and I thought it would be beneficial to have an idea of what the job market was like.

What is the purpose of a website?

A website is a common site for businesses and people to communicate with each other. A website is a group of pages that are diverse in content and designed to a specific standard. For example, a blog post on a website will be different from a website that sells travel websites. A simple home page could be an article, a sales pitch, and a podcast all on one page. 

A website can contain many different types of content, such as an online store, a forum, and a blog. In fact, if a person is a web designer or programmer, they can add content to any type of web page and design new layouts for websites.


What are the components of a webpage?

The most basic part of a webpage is the HTML that it contains. HTML is the language that is written into a webpage to store what that webpage will contain. Two main elements are in HTML. The first is the <body>, which is used to hold the content on the page. The content can be, for example, you could have a photo album with some text in it to represent each picture. 

The second element of HTML that you will see is the <head>, which is the link that will tell the browser where to go for the next page. The head of the webpage is the HTML code that you need in order for the webpage to load. HTML5 was released as a complete technology for HTML.

Short-term goals for web development

Lately, many free and paid services have allowed you to create websites. Some of these services are paid, while others are free, giving you a platform to develop websites from. These include Wix, Squarespace, SiteGround, Dreamweaver, and Squarespace. The sites listed here are great for building your portfolio and web presence. Many other websites allow you to use your domain name and host your website. You can explore the different sites by starting from these and researching what other websites use to build their website.

Long-term goals for web development

You'll also be introduced to the growing field of UX design. You'll learn how designers can define how a website works from the user's perspective. In other words, what the user sees. By becoming acquainted with the concept of usability, you will be more able to develop websites that are pleasant to use, encouraging users to stick with your product.

Next, you'll learn about basic interactive concepts in websites. For example, you'll know how the page can rotate on its own and how a device like a smartphone can navigate the web page. You'll also learn about various ways that a webpage can display more information to the user.

Finally, you'll learn about building your website from scratch.
